In anyone’s life there are fortuitous coincidences that can lead to unexpected moments. A mere concert, with this regard, may represent an unforgettable example.

No ifs and buts, just the right conditions are necessary to make it possible: suppose a lady from Michigan has got a remarkable artist as a friend -now dead-, then imagine to happen to find yourself suddenly in a city on the other side of the world and, once there, to see her play the piano the way you have always wanted.

The place is Turin, in the north of Italy, while the stage is the Piccolo Regio, during the festival LINGUAGGI JAZZ. Take a seat amid the public, it is a Saturday night, the 6th of March in a year that has no importance.

Nothing else matters, in fact, as soon as she starts pressing the white and black bars, because what comes out from there is a “dancing on the water”. It has been written somewhere, thus it must be true. Anyway, words are like the piano keys: they speak, they say things, and later they disappear, under one’s eyes, under one’s fingers.

Describing notes wouldn’t be that difficult, weren’t the feelings they arise so fleeting. Paper burns and music fades away without retaining a glimpse of the past foot-lights; though, not a single emotion can be cancelled, whether it has changed your perception of the world, even if just for a second. Call it the power of a fable, one of those fables that ends up being read again and again, a thousand times, as long as a longing survives.

Tonight the atmosphere in the theatre’s room is made of an elegant Jazz, as precise as a watch. And when the alarm rings, announcing that your time has finished, the bubble bursts, leaving space to reality. By chance, as it had begun.

Well, this dream you have thought of is the story of a woman, Miss Geri Allen, and her tribute to Mr. Mal Waldron.

Un altro Jazz

Nella vita di ognuno ci sono coincidenze fortuite che possono portare a momenti inattesi. Un banale concerto, a questo proposito, può rappresentare un esempio indimenticabile.

Niente se e ma, bastano le giuste condizioni a renderlo possibile: figuratevi che una signora del Michigan abbia un famoso artista come amico –ormai morto-, poi immaginate di trovarvi improvvisamente in una città dall’altra parte del mondo e, una volta lì, di vederla suonare il piano nel modo in voi avreste sempre voluto.

Il luogo è Torino, nel nord dell’Italia, mentre il palco è il Piccolo Regio, durante il festival LINGUAGGI JAZZ. Prendete posto in mezzo al pubblico, è un sabato sera, il 6 di Marzo di un anno che non ha importanza.

Nient’altro importa, infatti, non appena lei inizia a premere i legnetti bianchi e neri, perché quel che viene fuori da laggiù è una “danza sull’acqua”. È stato scritto da qualche parte, quindi deve essere vero. Comunque le parole sono come i tasti del piano: parlano, dicono cose, e poi scompaiono, sotto i propri occhi, sotto le dita.

Descrivere le note non sarebbe tanto difficile, se i sentimenti che fanno nascere non fossero così fuggevoli. La carta brucia e la musica svanisce senza trattenere un barlume delle andate luci della ribalta; però neanche un’emozione può essere cancellata, se ha cambiato la vostra percezione del mondo, seppur per un secondo soltanto. Chiamatelo il potere di una fiaba, una di quelle fiabe che finiscono con l’essere lette e rilette mille volte, finché anche un solo desiderio sopravvive.

Stanotte l’atmosfera nella sala del teatro è fatta di un Jazz elegante, preciso come un orologio. E quando la sveglia suona ad annunciare che la vostra ora è scaduta, la bolla scoppia lasciando spazio alla realtà. Per caso, come era iniziato.

Beh, questo sogno a cui avete pensato è la storia della signora Geri Allen, e del suo tributo a Mal Waldron.
